Born 1914 Rapperswil Switzerland, died 1996. Defining figure of Swiss International Typographic Style — grid systems, sans-serif type, asymmetric layouts, photography-over-illustration. Designed iconic Zurich Tonhalle concert posters (1950s-60s). Authored 'Grid Systems in Graphic Design' (1981) — became the bible of grid-based design. Founded Neue Grafik magazine 1958. Co-founded the magazine that defined the Swiss Style abroad.
